Description: |
The printed card has an image of Francis Murphy, an evangelist who created this temperance pledge card in the 1870s. The pledge reads: "With malice toward none, with charity for all, I the undersigned do pledge my word and honor, God helping me, to abstain from all intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and that I will,by all honorable means, encourage others to abstain."It is signed by Chester S. Wirts. The 1910 US Census shows a Chester S. Wirts (1878-1967) living in Union Township, Wells County, Indiana. Other records show that he lived in Bluffton. |
