Royster and Askin Undertakers, Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 1910

Description: A horse-drawn wagon, probably a hearse, in front of a two-story frame building that houses Royster and Askin Undertakers. Written on the back is: Dad - Charles Royster and friend when they first were in business at 2326 N. Michigan St.Undertakers Royster & Askin, with roots dating to 1902, operated from this frame building at 2326 West Michigan Street in the Haughville neighborhood from at least 1904 until the 1920s. The men in front are believed to be partners Clifford G. Askin (1878-1944, also founder of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science) and Charles H. Royster (1874-1963), whose family lived upstairs or adjacent to the funeral home. The business continued under the management of Roysters son, John William Royster, until his retirement in 1973, although it was later located at other locations. This frame building was demolished by 1940 when the West Side Bowling Center was built on the site (located near the northeast corner of West Michigan Street and North Tremont Avenue). In 2005 the Christamore Court Apartments were constructed in this block.
