J. H. Beacham Cigar Store with burlesque poster, Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 1914

Description: A young man identified as Edward Lowe (1899-1971, the husband of the donors great-aunt) stands in the doorway of a cigar and tobacco store at 450 Indiana Avenue owned by James H. Beacham. The business was listed with Beacham as the proprietor in the 1913 City Directory. Signs for Fatima Cigarettes, Havana Ribbon, and Mail Pouch are on the window of the shop. On the right is a large poster for Robies Beauty Show, a burlesque and vaudeville show owned by Louis Robie that advertised at the Columbia Theatre in Indianapolis in late April, 1914.The small frame shop is shown in Sanborn Fire Insurance maps in a triangle of land surrounded by the Central Canal on the west, railroad tracks to the east, and Indiana Avenue (near Michigan Street) to the northeast. The ladder to the left is probably railroad related. Newspaper advertisements from 1928 for this address state that the Smoke House there was established since 1903. From at least 1915 and 1920 it was owned by Paul Carl Russe (1884-1951).
