Elizabeth Burger (1902-1996) stands in the middle. The man next to her is possibly her fiance, Lynn Keene (1901-1938).Research done by Roger Morphew indicates that the photo was taken at or very near the intersection of East Lincolnway and South Garfield Avenue in Valparaiso. Morphew determined the route of the old State Rd 42. From the point the group stands to Westville is 10.6 miles via the old route of E Lincolnway and the Lincoln Highway. From Westville via the Lincoln Highway to La Porte is 11.6 miles. From La Porte to downtown South Bend via the Lincoln Highway and Lincoln Way W is 27.5 miles. So, by rounding to the nearest mile, you have the distance to Westville as 11 miles, the distance to La Porte as 22 miles and the distance to South Bend as 50 miles. |
