Caption: The Lanier Home in Madison, Indiana, designed by noted architect Francis Costigan, was considered one of the most palatial homes in Indiana when it was completed in 1844. James Lanier, for whom the house was built, saved Indiana from bankruptchy during the Civil War by lending the state $420,000. The house stayed in the family until 1925, when Indiana acquired it as a State Memorial. |
