Description: |
Circa 1885 cabinet card portrait of an older bearded man by George A. Harnish, Bluffton, Indiana. Handwritten is A. J. Cartwright / 37th St. (Soldiers Home) / Marion, Ind.Markings on the back indicate that this photograph was copied (the envelope glue residue), so, as was typical, the name might indicate the person who ordered the copy instead of the man pictured. Andrew J. Cartwright (1847-1930) was a Civil War veteran who died in Marion, Grant County. He was in the 153rd Indiana Infantry and lived the majority of his life in Wells County, Indiana. He lived in the Marion Branch of the National Home of Disabled Soldiers from at least 1900-1930. In 1910 he is listed as a hospital nurse among male civilian employees. He would have only been about age 38 at the time this portrait was made and the man pictured appears to be in his 60s or 70s. His father James S. Cartwright (1817-1894) would have been about age 68, so it is possibly him or another relative. |
