The Bates House was on the northwest corner of West Washington and North Illinois Streets. Signs can be seen for Bee-Line Passenger Office, Bates Pharmacy, A. M. Williams, The Great Atlantic and Pacific, Wrought Iron Bridge Company, and Ticket Office for the Pan Handle Route and the Vandalia Line.
