Description: |
Three men pose with socialist newspapers and a book near a fountain on the northwest corner of West Monroe and North Market Streets. A small black dog sits up in front of the man on the right. The photo was taken in a park near the Wabash Depot. The view looks northeast across North Market Street toward the Arlington Hotel and two brick houses (the one on the right is at 121 West Monroe Street and still stands as of 2015). Formerly known as the Graham House (at least 1886-1893), the Arlington Hotel operated under this name from at least 1900 to 1912. It was demolished between 1998 and 2003.The Weekly People headlines include Over-Capitalization and The Financial Panic. It was printed in Brooklyn, New York from 1901 to 1973. The Chicago Daily Socialist operated between 1906 and 1912. Headlines include E. D. Debs Can Really Tell What Is the Matter With America. This is likely referring to Eugene V. Debs, a union leader and five-time Socialist Party of America candidate for U. S. president. The book is Men and Mules, with a similar cover to the 15th edition printed in 1908. W. F. Ries of Toledo wrote this 10-cent book as part of a series about labor issues. |
