Description: |
The assumed postmaster stands in front of the U.S. Post Office in Maywood. A public sale poster on the left is dated February 5, 1920 and the one to the right October 22, 1919. The post office is attached to a one-story frame house with a porch and garage. The Indianapolis Star reported in 1957 that the first town postmaster was Isaac Wyrick who was succeeded by his brother Henry W. Wyrick (1867-1939, probably the man shown) who served for 42 years, assisted by his wife. They lived in the house and one room was dedicated to postal work. As the city of Indianapolis grew, the tiny post office became a branch of the Indianapolis Post Office. In 1956 the frame building was replaced by a larger structure located at 2730 South Tibbs Avenue. |
