Oda Arbuckle in auto polo match, Indiana, circa 1924

Description: A crowd in the grandstand watches two cars in an auto polo match, possibly at the Rushville old speedway located south of the city limits. The photograph came from the photo album of Marie (Newhouse) Harcourt, 1900-1992, who lived the majority of her life in Rush and Shelby counties. The players drive 1916 or 1917 stripped-down Ford Chassis models with roll bars. Each car has two men: one driving and the other a malletman who hits a ball with a heavy mallet.A name written at the bottom is Oda Arbuckle. Oda F. Arbuckle (1899-1979) resided primarily in Shelby and Rush Counties. He traveled around Indiana as an auto polo player in the early 1920s. In 1918 he lived in Fairland in Shelby County, where young men of Fairland and London organized automobile polo teams in 1919.
