Bippus School, Bippus, Indiana, circa 1907

Description: Two-story brick school with bell tower. Carriages are parked in the foreground. The Artura stamp block dates it to about 1907.According to the Huntington Herald, November 21, 1911, p. 1, the Bippus School was originally a two-room structure, but it was doubled in 1898. One section was used by high school students and the other by grade students. Petitioners stated that it was unsafe in case of fire, as the space between the old and new sections only had a winding stairway about three feet in width. Because a statute prevented alterations to schools with 500 feet of railroad tracks, and this school was close to the Erie Railroad tracks, a new school and location were requested. The Erie Railroad tracks intersected Bippus east of town on Market Street (W 800 N). A new school was built north of town in 1916-1917.
