Four people are seen on an upper balcony of the Morris-Butler House. Written at the bottom of the photo is 1204 Park Ave - Photo taken 1891. Staff of the Morris-Butler House have dated the image to 1867 or as late as the 1880s when the Butler family added the double porch to the south.This Second Empire-style home was designed by architect Diedrich A. Bohlen and built in 1864-65 for the John D. Morris family. Morris, the son of an Indianapolis pioneer, purchased a lot from Butler Universitys founder Ovid Butler in a north-side suburb known later as the Old Northside. Morris worked as a railroad agent and later was with the Capital City Planing Mill.Noble Chase Butler, a bankruptcy attorney, moved his family into the home in 1881 where he lived until his death in 1933. His daughter Florence was the last family member to own the house when she died in 1957. |
