Time stamped May 1968. Indianapolis Public Schools Educational Building photographed shortly after construction. The $2.9 million administrative building, designed by Kennedy, Brown, and Associates and Lewis, Shimmer, and Associates, is on the northwest corner of North Delaware and Walnut Streets. It was designed in 1965 and scheduled for completion in late 1966. The Education Center was designed with two floors of parking, conference rooms, auditorium, education study rooms, and offices.It was renamed the Dr. John Morton-Finney Center for Educational Services in honor of a remarkable African American teacher at Crispus Attucks High School. Morton-Finney (1889-1998) was born in Kentucky to a former slave. Before moving to Indianapolis in 1922, he served as a Buffalo Soldier and with the American Expeditionary Force in France during World War I. At Attucks he was head of the foreign language department where he taught Greek, Latin, German, Spanish, and French. In 1935 he received his first law degree and was known as one of the longest serving attorneys in the U.S., practicing until his retirement at age 106. He never stopped learning and earned eleven degrees, five in law and also math, history, and sociology. |
