| Description: |
Frank Fox and family opened their new Foxs Jail House restaurant and bar in 1933. The jail-themed business was located just east of downtown on the southeast corner of East Washington Street and Highland Avenue and aimed to appeal to a 1930s public fascinated with gangsters and John Dillinger on the loose. This card is a few years after the opening, when the jail theme had been toned down a bit, but some elements remain. In the back of the restaurant is a sign that says Foxs Jail Birds, where customers could dine in cells. In the main dining room, however, formica and chrome popular in the 1940s dominate. A counter with a row of stools lines the left, booths on the right next to the window, and a row of four-top tables down the middle. The jail house theme lasted about ten years, but by the 1940s the family redecorated in a much more upscale manner and was known as Foxs Steak House.
