On the mount it reads Part of the crowd attending the sale of Uncle Toms household goods. Sept. 16, 51. F. Fruit, auctioneer.Tom Smith (1863-1955, originally Schmitt) lived in Tippecanoe Township (Kosciusko County) most of his life but moved to the northeast corner of Washington and Elm Streets in Pierceton in his later years. He was the great uncle of the photographer. His wife Mary (Geller) died in 1951, the year of this auction. The man holding household goods near the ladder is local auctioneer Frank Fruit. The auction attendees stand in front of his house and the view looks east. The brown house in the distance was demolished by 2019. The mill in the distance was known as McCarters Feed Mill and was owned by Clair McCarter. It sold to Mr. Shank in 1965 and the Civil War-era structure burned to the ground in August 1967. |
