Henry Mereland Jacks, Sr. (1908-1999) was the founder of the Jacksign Display Company, an African-American owned business that made signs, posters, displays, and provided silk screen printing. He owned it for 70 years. Advertisements from 1936 in the Indianapolis Recorder state that the business was located at 1306-1308 North Senate Avenue. Seen are posters for Pops Whitman and the Whitman Sisters. An ad in the August 11, 1938 Indianapolis Star promotes the Whitman Sisters Floor Show performing with 22 people at the Sunset Terrace, a venue on Indiana Avenue.One of the men might be Lawson F. Jacks, a brother of the owner who was known to work for the company prior to 1939. |
