Carte de visite of Civil War Soldier James M. Keen, circa 1863

Description: Vignetted carte de visite portrait of a Civil War soldier in uniform. Written on the front is Present by J. M. Keen and written on the verso is Dr. J. J. Keen. Many photos in the album were from the Lafayette area. The recipient of the photo was Dr. Joshua J. Keen, who lived in Americus and Buck Creek, Indiana in Tippecanoe County. He also served in the Civil War.This is likely James M. Keen (b. about 1839), the younger brother of Joshua J. Keen. He served in the Civil War, enlisting at Bucyrus, Ohio on September 3, 1861 and serving with Company E of the 34th Ohio Infantry. He was discharged in Columbus, Ohio on September 12, 1864. Census records indicate that in 1870, his family lived in Logan, Fountain County, Indiana. By 1880, the family lived in Indianapolis. He later lived in Lafayette, Indiana and was admitted to the National Soldiers Home in Dayton, Ohio in 1912.
