A large sign outside the school advertised the services of its students. It reads (in part): Emergency stenographers - Perfect work, moderate prices.According to newspaper articles and city directories, the Lain Private Business School, also known as the Lain Business College, was founded in 1906 by Marvin M. Lain and his wife Minnie Lain. The school was located at 408 North Delaware Street between 1906 and about late 1910 when they constructed a new building at 601-603 North Delaware Street. This two-story brick house was built in 1853 by David and Mary Ann (Patterson) Macy. After the Macys moved a block north, it became a rental property known as the Ketcham house. It was razed by the 1950s. |
