Description: |
View is looking northeast toward the intersection of Second and South Streets. Photo has 4-26-18 in ink on the front. April 26, 1918, was a special holiday declared by both President Wilson and Governor Goodrich as LIBERTY DAY. It was also the day important in local military history as the day 87 new members of the army marched to the Big Four station to go to Camp Zachary Taylor. Lafayette and Tippecanoe County turned out en masse to bid them God Speed. It was also the 20th Anniversary of 87 other soldiers who left Tippecanoe County for the front, over the same railroad at about the same time. Those were the Tippecanoe Rifles Company C, Fourth Regiment of the Indiana National Guard. The Purdue Armory was also dedicated on April 26, 1918. The following day the first Army school ever to be conducted in Tippecanoe County opened with the U. S. Army auto mechanics school opened at Purdue. |
