The pole is attached to the Joseph Gutzweiler building on the northwest corner of Main Street and the Courthouse SquareBetty and Benny Fox were an acrobatic duo that performed around the United States throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Their act consisted of dancing and acrobatics atop a platform about 18 inches wide and 100 feet in the air. Several women performed as Betty throughout their tenure, but Benny was performed by the same man. Although they were promoted as a brother-sister act, the first Betty was his wife.In his autobiography, Ralph D. Gray states that in April 1941 he saw a performance of Betty and Benny Fox on top of the Tivoli Theatre in Jasper on the Courthouse Square.
