Description: Bicycle Action Project program manager Daniel Herbertz repairs a bicycle tire while a participant watches. They work in the old fire station at 748 Massachusetts Avenue. Charles F.Hammond founded the nonprofit in July 1988 to acquire bicycles for youths in need. Recipients received a free bicycle after completing the Earn-a-Bike Program consisting of work-incentive classes that taught life and work skills and self esteem. The project continued until 2005 and was a model for similar programs in other states.
