Description: Older real photo postcard of man with dog in front of an ornate doorway with sculptures of lions on either side. Handwritten on the back is 1424 N. Meridian St. / Henry D Pierce / Son - Douglas Pierce, but the correct address was 1415 North Meridian Street. A copy of this photograph is on Find A Grave for the Henry Douglas Pierce (1848-1929) memorial. The lioness and cubs bronze sculptures were two of six made by a New York firm from a smaller model by artist Joseph Bonheur for a wealthy tobacconist by the name of Lorillard. Only six duplicates were made and the mold was destroyed. The house, known as the Vinton-Pierce house, was built in 1862 for William Henderson from plans by architect Francis Costigan or Joseph Curzon. The Almus E. Vinton family bought the house in 1865 and daughter Elizabeth Vinton Pierce, wife of Henry D. Pierce, lived in the house until her death in 1936. It was razed in October 1936 for a commercial building. The old address was 725 North Meridian Street. Another copy of this image is dated 1919.
