Carthage A.M.E. church reunion, Carthage, Indiana, circa 1970s

Description: Men at the Mount Pleasant Beech Church pose with a marker that reads Historical Record / Free colored people from North Carolina settled here in 1828. On June 16th 1832, by a resolution adopted by a vote of the church members, they chose the A.M.E. church as their religious denomination. On October 2nd 1840, the Indiana Annual Conference of the A.M.E. Church was organized here.The Old Beech Church, built in about 1865, and cemetery is all that remains in the Beech Settlement of Rush County, Indiana, a rural African-American community that reached a population of nearly 400 at its peak. Although the church closed in the 1910s, descendants of the original settlers return annually for a homecoming church service and reunion in August. Since being placed on Indiana Landmarks Ten Most Endangered list in 2016, the simple Greek Revival frame church has been restored and was rededicated in August 2019.The photographer of this image was probably Van Overman.
