Description: |
Two men sit on the lawn with Purdue buildings behind them. The building on the right is the Mechanical Engineering Building, where Glenn Nelson studied his major. Built in 1894, the original Mechanical Engineering Building burned down four days after its dedication. It was rebuilt and completeed in 1895. It was expanded in 1921 and renamed Heavilon Hall in 1930. According to the Purdue Library Archives and Special Collections, in 1956, the clock tower and front portion of the building was torn down to make room for the present day Heavilon Hall. The remaining portion of the building was torn down in 1969 to make room for the Herbert C. Brown Laboratory of Chemistry. On the left is the newly completed University Library. It was built in 1913 to house the books previously stored in University Hall. Two wings were added in 1934 and a temporary annex in 1947. The annex was removed in 1954 and the Stewart Center was built around the library in 1958. The footprint of the library is visible as the wing that extends north toward Heavilon Hall. |
