Description: |
Front depicts a large brick building with a mansard roof and two turrets. A neon sign above the door reads "K of C / In God We Trust," and another sign reads "Private Parking." The back caption gives more context-- "Knights of Columbus 437 / Indianapolis, Indiana / Mother Council of the State of Indiana / First building in the United States outwardly to display the National Motto, 'In God We Trust.'"According to the Knights of Columbus 437 website, the Knights purchased the building, built in 1874 and known as the Hugh McGowan mansion, in 1919 from Mrs. Hugh McGowan. An expansion known as McGowan Hall was constructed in 1922. The mansion was demolished in 1963, but McGowan Hall remains. |
