[View of the house: image ia-0326-0012 .]According to the Indianapolis Times, Monday, December 6, 1926, p. 1, the farm home of S. C. Rickert, near Hartford City, was destroyed by fire on December 4. Mildred, an IU student recovering from a recent operation saved her invalid brother. S. C. Rickert was burned while carrying his aged sister, Miss Margaret Rickert down a ladder. Lonnie Miller, a deaf and dumb farm hand [and relative], age 60, perished in the fire.According to the lender, this home (located on 500 E. in Randolph County), was owned by Josiah Miller and his wife. Sam and Lettie (Miller) Rickert, parents of Mildred Rickert) lived in it at the time of the fire. After it burned, they converted a chicken house into a temporary home until adding onto it with a Sears kit house.
