| Description: |
The restaurant opened in 1960 as the McKinley House on McKinley Avenue just east of Ironwood, but was renamed the Skillet by early 1963 when Don Murphy was proprietor. The view looks southeast and the house in the background is located on 2303 Club Drive. [The black-and-white version of this photo was timestamped June 1963, and can be seen at ia-0184-0161.]According to local newspapers, in 1961 and 1962 there was a zoning dispute over this parking lot. Neighbors in the newly developed Swanson Park subdivision objected to its location in a residential neighborhood. The restaurant building had originally housed the Swanson real estate office. |
