Delivery of the McCormick Memorial Rock, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1924

Description: Men stand by a Capitol Transfer Company truck parked near a large boulder. The rock has an inset bronze plaque that commemorates the cabin of John Wesley McCormick, Jr. (1792-1825) and his wife Bethia (Case) McCormick (1795-1874), early Indianapolis settlers. In the background is the office of the Acme-Evans Company, makers of E-Z Bake Flour, located on the northwest corner of Blake Street and the National Road (West Washington Street) just east of the White River. This view looks north.According to the National Register of Historic Places nomination form for the McCormick Cabin Site, the memorial was dedicated on June 7, 1924. The bronze tablet, designed by Paul Hadley, reads: Here stood the cabin of John McCormick, one of the first settlers in central Indiana. The Commissioners appointed by the legislature to select a site for the permanent seat of government of the state of Indiana met in this cabin on the seventh of June 1820 and decided upon the location of the town afterwards named Indianapolis. The Indiana Historical Commission advertised for a large granite boulder in 1922 and one was provided from the William Hanch farm west of Indianapolis on the National Road. It was placed on the site in about August 24, 1923 and the tablet was installed prior to the June 7, 1924 dedication.
