Description: |
A man poses with his car in front of Mercers Garage. Written on the back is Pren Probst. Located in the back near the railroad tracks is Hunding Dairy, where many local dairy farmers brought their cans of milk. Anna L. (Nelson) Mercer photographed many of the stations customers in the summer of 1948 before she and her husband Marion G. Mercer traded their gas station for one in Kentucky (but returned after just three months). She wanted to record the faces of their community before they moved. The Mobil Oil station was owned and operated by the Mercers from 1945 until 1978, then operated by their daughter and son-in-law Brenda and Byron Ward until it closed in 1995. The station was located on the southwest corner of Hamilton Street and Long Lane in Wellsboro (which later shared a post office with Union Mills). The station still stands on the site as of May 2024. |
