100 year old blacksmith at work, Beatrice, Indiana, October, 1931

Description: The caption on the back of this Chicago Bureau photograph reads, Still the Blacksmith at the Century Mark - Photo shows: James J. McCafferty, 100, who still works at his anvil each day at his small shop in Beatrice, ind. McCafferty was born in Sauk Co. Wisconsin, and started to work at his trade when fourteen years old and had followed it throughout his life with the exception of a few years in the Army, 1861-1865 when he was placed in charge of a band of scouts by President Lincoln. 10-20-31. Stamped October 27, 1931.
