Buildings (from right to left) include: 1) the four-story building to the right is the Blackford Building, 2) the four-story building east of it was the Harrison Bank Building, 3) next to the east is the three-story Johnson Block, 4) Glenns Block had a tower that was occupied by a watchman for the fire department, 5) College Hall was on the southwest corner of East Washington and Pennsylvania Streets, 6) in the distance is the A. & H. Schnull Wholesale Grocery building.This is a copy photograph. Written on the front is 31197 / W. H. Bass Photo Co. Washington St. looking East from Meridian St. 1862. The original photographer took the photograph from an upper floor window of a building on the north side of East Washington Street. An article about the photograph states that it was taken in the summer of 1862. [Photograph Made in Indianapolis in 1862 Recalls Citys Activities in the Long Ago, Indianapolis News, January 8, 1916] Other sources state that this photograph was taken in 1864. |
