Collapse of the Schull Block on South Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1988

Description: Collapse of one section of the five-section Schnull Block on the southwest corner of South Meridian and West Maryland Streets, which occurred on June 11, 1988. It was owned by Melvin Simon and Associates, who had signed an agreement with historic preservationists to save the facade, but raze the rest of the block for Circle Centre Mall. Eventually, the rest of Schnulls Block was demolished and none of the facade was saved.According to the Wholesale District Historic Area Plan, p. 124 (Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission), this building was erected in 1863. It was the first wholesale commercial building constructed in the Wholesale District. The building was altered after a fire in the late 1890s, and the round porthole windows were added at that time.
