The 1910 census lists a man named Moses Winski, born in Yiddish Russia, who lived with his wife Emma [Levine] and sons Harold, Herbert, and Bernard at 806 Brown Street in Lafayette. His trade was listed as fruit store. Jewish merchant Mose Winski (1881-1953) was born in Poland. He is listed at a retail fruit seller at 602 Main Street in the 1907 Lafayette city directory and at 612 Main Street in the 1913 and 1915 directories.Norm Winski, a grandson of Mose and Emma Winski, shared the following on June 30, 2022 on Facebook: Mose graduated from the horse and wagon and opened a produce store on the southwest corner of the square in downtown Lafayette. During the 1920s, he also had a tire store just around the corner, to the west and south of the produce store. He also worked part time with his father Oscar at the family scrap business. |
