Solomon and Hattie (Hunter) Erb house, Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 1892

Description: Two women and a girl are seen in front of a wood frame house with the address 16. Written on the back is 16 Carlos St., my mother and Grandma Hunter. In another hand is written My mother little girl and Margaret (Erb) Githens, My grandmother Hattie (Hunter) Erb and great grandmother Mary Eliza Hunter. Margaret Maggie Erb Githers was born on April 25, 1886, dating this photograph to about 1892. City directories show that the family of machinist Solomon Erb (husband of Hattie) and Eliza Hunter (widow of Hugh and mother of Hattie Erb) lived in the house from about 1892 until 1897. Also living there at that time was a cooper named Michael Campbell.The house at 16 Carlos Street was built before 1887 and was located on the west side of Carlos Street between Ray and Wilkins Street. It was renamed and numbered 1030 South Senate Avenue in the late 1890s. Houses in this block were taken by eminent domain and demolished between 1966 and 1972 to build Interstate 70.
