Description: |
These young men attended Boyville, a camp held during the Battle Ground Camp Meeting, an annual Methodist religious retreat. The Boyville movement, likely inspired by William Allen Whites 1890s short story The King of Boyville, was popular throughout the US in the early 1900s. Young men created their own government, elected their own officers, and were taught to be productive citizens. The Boyville camp at Battle Ground was held until at least the 1950s.Not many of the boys are identifiable today, but Norman Frank Peacock is sitting in the front row, eighth from the right. His twin brother, William Fred Peacock is standing and is the first boy on the left. The Peacock brothers were twins born October 9, 1911 and believed to have been about the age of twelve at the time of this photograph. Their father, Norman F. Peacock was a physician in Darlington, Indiana. Later in life, Norman also became a physician, William Fred became a dentist and they shared an office space in Crawfordsville, Indiana. |
