Description: |
Extremely rare image of the Pittsburgh, Ft. Wayne and Chicago [Pennsylvania Railroad] station at Eagle Lake, Indiana. Eagle Lake was the original name of Winona Lake. This station served scheduled passenger train stops, and it served a shuttle train aka dummy train that shuttled back and forth between Warsaw and Winona Lake on a siding track. The double tracking of this railroad around 1902 precluded the use of the dummy train and gave rise to the trolley system between Winona Lake and Warsaw, Indiana. This photograph shows a well dressed lady with her bicycle, baggage carts and people standing both inside and outside of the station. Electric street lights are seen as well as railroad signaling devices. A view of the lake is very evident, and the shoreline is obviously different than it is today. |
