Winona was founded in 1897 for the purpose of providing a place where people could spend their vacation amidst religious environment and influence, where religion, education and recreation were the dominating factors in the activities. Established in the very center of population, Winona has wielded a mighty influence for good which has been felt the world around. Many missionaries spend time at Winona during their furloughs, returning to the Field strengthened mentally, spiritually and physically. Ministers attend the Bible Conference, listen to the masterful sermons of the leading preachers of this and other countries, then return to their churches with new zeal and fresh inspiration. Laymen and their families find in Winona The Idea Summer Resort, offering clean, wholesome entertainment and sport with a rare opportunity for rest.Winona Lake is considered the largest Bible Conference grounds in the world, attracting the most outstanding teachers, expositers and preachers of the land to its platform each year. The Billy Sunday Tabernacle, where most of the meetings are held, has a seating capacity of 7500 persons with a smaller auditorium seating 2000 persons. People from every state in the Union and from foreign countries have visited Winona, and have gone away refreshed in body, spiritually filled and happy in the knowledge that at Winona they have found the answer for a place to spend a perfect vacation under ideal conditions for all human needs. The early business block on the west side of Park Ave. in downtown Winona Lake. The early days of Winona offered warm month activities and as a result some of the business shown here are of the open air variety. A candy store, bowling alley and drug and soda shop are seen. |
