Addressed to, Miss Marie Lukens, Disko, Ind. The Venetian Nights attracted thousands of spectators. The event peaked in 1909 and ended in 1917. These water floats circled McDonald Island and paraded through the canal. Electric lights and bleachers were set up along the canal. Prizes were awarded in three categories: Most Beautiful, Funiest, and best commerical class. H.J. Heinz entered floats that looked like catsup bottles and mammoth pickles. A Capt. Pine worked on these floats during the winter time. He created papermache lions, elephants, pelicans, eagles and butterflies. In its heyday this was a big event. |
