Inside: Script in upper left reads, Winona Lake, Ind.Outside: Edited: Antique dealers script reads, Canals of Indiana. This image contains a great deal of historical information. Along the bottom edge of the card is the Pennsylvania Railroad, the passenger station, a passenger train, the railroad tower, stacks of stored railroad times and utility poles. Along the skyline starting on the left and moving right we find a number of significant buildings. At the far left is Strain Hall. Strain Hall housed the Conservatory of Music but burned down shortly after it was built. It was the corner of present day Seventh Street and Kings Highway. To the right of Strain Hall is the Mount Memorial Building and to its right is Westminster Hall. Many of the houses were destroyed in the 1914 fire. In the center we see the Winona Hotel and to its right is the Entrance Building. McDonald Island juts out into Winona Lake and the grayish structure is the Castle. Ths small underpass under the railroad is NOT the present Argonne Road underpass/viaduct. |
