Early maps indicate that the natural shoreline of Winona Lake was in the area where Park Avenue is now located. Lowering the lake level to accommodate the creation of the island changed the shoreline. Early accounts of this area tell that this area was covered heavily with brush and trees. A miniature railroad paralleled this street until its removal around 1908. A small portion of this street at the end of Park Avenue is still called Lake Shore Drive. At one time many ducks inhabited this area causing havoc with drivers. In the wintertime snowdrifts are a challenge to street department employees. This street greeted millions of visitors to Winona. |
