Hillside Meeting

Description: Not pictured: Back: Printed memo reads, Hillside, Seats more than 2000 for inspiring outside vesper services. Winona Lake Christian Assembly, Winona Lake, Indiana, Home of the Worlds Greatest Bible Conference.
The Hillside or Hillside Amphitheater was constructed on the lake side of the Beyer Home. The facility was built in 1910 utilizing the natural contour of the glacial bowl. Obviously it gets its name from its location. It probably has more negatives than positives. There is no place to go if it rains and the seat surfaces are at the mercy of the weather. Insects have no barriers. The sights and sounds of the surrounding area can be distracting. The platform is small and for years only a small electronic organ was used to assist the singing. There are storage areas under the platform and at one time there were strings of bare light bulbs. However, it was a popular place for afternoon and early evening services. (the Tabernacle was used if it rained) It had a capacity of about 2000 with room for more who brought blankets or folding chairs. Some of America’s greatest preachers and speakers graced the stage. Services were held there daily during the heyday of the Bible Conferences. The venue still exists.
