Front: Script at bottom of postcard reads, TAPS - Chicago Boys Club Camp, Winona Lake, Ind.Back: Body of message reads, Greetings! If you should happen to have a day off, this is a very fine place to visit. You would both enjoy it and be inspired by our camp - 150 acres of varied scenery. We have a real church in the wildwood, for our Sunday services. I have been introduced to the great sport of turtle hunting out here and have caught my first and last: Sincerely, Ethel Saide. Addressed to, Rev. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Hildebrand, 3506 W. 62nd Place, Chicago, Illinois. The message of the postcard deals with turtle hunting. In 1937 turtles were plentiful around Winona Lake. Turtles tend to dig in, head first, to the warm mud of a river bank or lake shore. The turtles tails and back ends are left exposed. The turtle hunter has to grab the turtles tail, very quickly, and pull it out of the mud. The turtle is not happy and will attempt to bite the tail holder. Snapping turtles can be very dangerous. One can imagine what the sounds of taps signaled for the camper from the big city. The familiar sounds of the El, the trolleys and other big city noises were replaced by the sounds of crickets, frogs and other wildlife. |
