Jonathan Chapin to Lucius Chapin, February 13, 1854

Description: Describes an incident in which a senior, J. Cook, delivered a speech that questioned some assertions of the Bible and the competence of Doctors of Divinity. His speech was harshly criticized by Prof. Hovey who later prevented Cook from defending his positions in an essay to be read in Chapel. Students later gathered to affirm their rights to free speech and self-defense and responded enthusiastically to Cooks scathing essay.
