Accounts of the selection of Charles White as president of the College

Description: Written account by E.O. Hovey and two newspaper items.
1841. The death of President Baldwin cast a heavy cloud of gloom over the College. Many long and sad evenings were spent by the Trustees, in consultation as to whom they should appoint his successor, till the name of Rev. Charles White was named, then Pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Owego N.Y. Having received satisfactory testimonials of his fitness for the responsible office, Mr. White was unanimously elected, upon a salary of 1200 dollars & Prof. Hovey appointed agent to secure his acceptance. April 6, 1841.Subsequent to his acceptance in June 1841, President White spent a short time in connexion with Prof. Hovey in collecting funds for the College, and entered upon his Presidency Oct. 1841.During Prof. Hoveys absence Thomas S. Milligan acted as tutor.
