| Description: |
The ground was broken for Clowes Memorial Hall on August 15, 1960, but by the next year, construction was delayed as the structural engineering firm was changed mid-construction. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot building is constructed of reinforced concrete and limestone. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building officially opened on October 18, 1963. Constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, the majority of the financing was made possible by his widow, Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. |
