Description: |
This bulldog statue appears to be nearly finished. Carved from Indiana limestone by Matthew Gray Palmer, in association with Old World Stone Carving, the statue was the senior class gift from the Class of 1996, which raised almost $4,000 to pay for the statue. In regards to the statue, Palmer says "that the ruffled brow that gives such a wonderful expression came about when the clay maquette took a tumble off the bench seat of the company truck when stopping at a red light. The indentation from hitting the floor gave it such a great attitude that we kept it and refined it in the carving" (personal communication, November 7, 2021). The finished statue is 36 inches high by 48 inches deep by 31 inches wide and was carved from a 3,000 pound block of Indiana limestone, donated by Indiana Limestone and John Tucker. As of 2021, the bulldog statue still stands in its original location on the Butler University campus, on the south side of Atherton Union. |
