Description: MemoriesThe halls looked wide, long and scaryto many of us, on the first day of ourfreshman year at UHS. After we brokethe ice of newness, we sponsored the firstdance of the class of 1952. The cafeteriawas decorated with pink and blue streamersand large silver raindrops to usher in Apriland to carry out our theme of the dance,April Showers.”The sophomore year started with an e-lection of the sophomore council. Led bythe council, the sophomore class plannedits second dance. Trying to get awayfrom the traditional dances, we decided onThe Hobo Hop” and required eveyoneto dress as much like a hobo as possible. The idea caught on, and the cafeteria looked more like a hobo convention than anordinary dance, as everyone came dressedin patched jeans, floppy hats and barefoot. The theme of the dance was carried outwith decorations of a huge hobo on thewall and an electric train with the proverbial hobo fire” in the middle. Closing our sophomore year as we had openedit, we had our election of the officers forour coming junior year.Rings were the first things that occupied our thoughts, as our ring committee voted on and selected our class rings. An excited class slipped their rings on and knewwhen they did so, that the class of 52” wastruly recognized. After the excitement of class rings wasover, our carnival practices started withweeks of hard work and fun put together. Not one of us will ever forget the MardiGras Stage Show,” the French Room, orthe halls filled with people, all enjoyingour big success—the carnival. Our annual dance during our junioryear was the Snowflake Shuffle.” Thesparkling, artificial snow and large silversnowflakes made it one of the best dancesof the year.On Junior Joe day, we came to schoolwith suits, heels and frills galore. The juniorclass tried to look their best on this annualoccasion at U. H. S.Our senior year started off with something brand new. This was the first yearfor our new football field. The first season on our new Univee Field was successful, and there were none prouder than thefirst seniors to play on the fields. A seniorwas elected for both football queen andhomecoming queen. Our homecoming game was the time forone of the most interesting activities ofthe year, when all four classes constructedhomecoming decorations. The lawn wasfilled with signs, posters, cars, and bedstelling how we were going to win ourgame. A prize was given to the classwith the best decorations. We watched our last sectional tourney, and many of our boys play for the lasttime. In spring we realized things were drawing to a close; and in one last fling beforewe became serious graduating seniors, wehad tramp day. Costumes, old corncobpipes, lanterns and torn jeans adorned thehalls and classes all day.The Junior-Senior banquet and prom formally opened senior week—a time of parties, picnics, and dances, that were our lastgood times with our entire class.Last of all in our high school career, camecommencement and baccalaureate. Thesewere sad moments for us all, when wesaw some of our friends for the last time. These were happy moments too, for werealized we had reached our goal after fouryears of hard work. We took our lastlook at the halls of old UHS and wishedthat these four years had not rushed by usso quickly.Page thirty-nine
