To top off our second year in high school we sponsored a “Pick and Shovel” dancein April. It was one of the most successful dances ever held at U.H.S. and officially introduced usas the Forty-Niners. In finishing our Sophomore year, Frank Rogers was elected as editor-in-chief ofthe 1949 Jordannus, and he in turn appointed Bob Engle as business manager. In January of our Junior year we gave one of the most novel dances in the history of the school,“The Grand Opening of Clementine’s Saloon.” Prematurely mustached bartenders kept everyonesupplied with root beer and pretzels, and closing time found couples departing through swingingdoors after a hilarious evening. The traditional Junior Penny Carnival was given March 19, underthe leadership of Mary Alice Rowland. This event, like the others up to that time, was extremelysuccessful and provided loads of amusement for those who attended. The Junior-Senior Prom, highlight of the Junior activities, took place on May 15. Programs in the shape of covered wagonsand similar decorations carried out our Forty-Niner theme. The next September we entered our last year at University High, our Senior year.In November we combined our efforts to present the delightful comedy “You Can’t Take ItWith You” as our Senior play. In spite of the hard work that went into rehearsals, we all had amarvelous time making this one of the best plays ever produced at U.H.S.On March 11, the Senior boys challenged the faculty to a basketball game, which ended withthe faculty on the big end of the score. A Senior Revue, presented in April, replaced the customaryJordannus skits.Any visitor would have been quite startled had he walked into school on Senior Tramp Daywhen everyone dressed in the most outlandish costume he could find!Senior Week, filled with parties and picnics, provided fun for all; and yet, at the Baccalaureateand Commencement exercises, we could not repress a feeling of sadness at the thought of leavingUniversity School for good. With our Senior year drawing to a close, we would like to sincerelythank all those who have helped us during our high school career and especially our threeJordannus sponsors, who have aided us greatly in presenting this yearbook to you.Page twenty-threea
