She thought of himleaving for active service, an officer.When she was a child, they used to discuss ambitions—hers, never his. Henever seemed to care about himself.She was crazy about him. He had Mother’s approval, too. Mother likedhim because—well, Ellen didn’t know. Other boy friends were always welcomed, but not like him.Tom had flu once and couldn’t take her to the Senior Stomp; so she calledhim at the bank where he worked and asked him to escort her. She thoughtit sounded a bit forward on her part, but when he accepted so enthusiasticallyshe felt much easier. They always had fun at school dances. He danced withother girls and Ellen was never jealous. Ellen danced with other boys and hedidn’t fume. Yes, he was better all the way around than the other boys.Evenings, when they didn’t want to leave the house, they’d play rummy,checkers, or bridge if they could corner a fourth. Sunday afternoon hikes werean institution. He could always out-run her, but he could never out-walk her.Right now she would have given anything in the world to have just one morehike or just one more rummy game. It was too late. The bottom had fallenout of her world.Mother came to the station.
