H. S. Iwas swept into a line. I was jostled andpushed to a massive table. There I boughta large yellow ticket for sixty cents’worth of fun at the annual Junior ClassPenny Carnival. I strolled about the hallsnoticing the weird changes. Solemn classrooms were now intriguing dens of mystery and entertainment. Everywhere therewere throngs of people shouting, laughing, making noises. In the gym screamsmingled with laughter as the ghostwalkgot into full swing. The constant thud of a basketball called you to get in line and try your luck atfree throws. Upstairs, bingo lured manypeople to stay and try to win a carton ofcokes. A delicious aroma filtered throughthe heavy air and following my nose, Icame to the cake walk; I heard the cakeswere fine.Suddenly someone ran through thehall shouting, “Only five minutes beforethe Stage Show!’’ I joined the stampedeto get a good seat. The hilarious talent exhibited at the club ’46 was finished witha superb finale by the “Clunk Cuties’’.After the show I turned my steps towardthe basement once more. Grimy cardswere punched as eager hopefuls tried towin a war stamp at darts, ping pong toss,or bean bags. I found the cafeteria dimlylit for dancing. At one end of the floorcokes and popsicles were sold by thedozen. The odor of popcorn penetratedinto every corner.Ten o’clock! What had seemed likeminutes had actually been hours! I hadtime to have just one more game of bingoand see the last carton of cokes finallydragged from its safe.Monday morning the school had oncemore taken on its familiar aspect of classrooms and halls, but the memory of thecarnival still was vivid as one of the biggest and best occasions of the school year.Page thirty-two
